Netbook Computers

Netbook computers have quickly become the most sought after computers on the market. So far in 2009, if you were to check the top selling notebook computers on Amazon.com on any given day, there is a good chance that most if not all of the top models would be netbooks. Consumers have made their love for these mini laptops obvious and the availability of pink netbooks make them even more appealing.

Perhaps you are thinking of purchasing a netbook or even a pink netbook computer and would like to learn more about them. Or maybe you are curious about why they have become such a huge hit with consumers. The following is a brief guide to netbooks and a discussion of the factors that have led to their popularity.

The first thing you find about netbooks is that they are far more compact than the laptops you are likely used to seeing. Their smaller footprint provides for an extremely portable computer, but one that sacrifices power and functionality. Netbook owners typically are not able to run resource intensive such as office suites directly on the netbook. Netbooks commonly use Windows XP or a version of Linux for their operating system.

The current starting price for a netbook is approximately $300 for a low end Linux based model. One can expect to pay up to $500 for a more feature rich netbook running Windows XP. To meet the emerging demand for netbooks, almost all well known laptop makers have added one or more netbooks to their lineup of products.

Since netbooks are not high powered enough to run demanding business software or video editing software for example, just what can you do with a netbook? Well, WiFi integration is a standard feature of netbooks so most Internet based applications pose few problems for netbook users. That means staying in communication with family and friends via email, instant messaging or Internet phone is generally possible without issue. Also, using browser based programs like Basecamp, Hotmail or Google Docs is usually easily accomplished as well.

What makes netbooks so popular is their low cost coupled with the ability to take one virtually anywhere. While power users may find them too underpowered, if you just want to perform routine tasks and be able to communicate from anywhere you can get a WiFi signal, netbooks may be your answer. The cost will not break the bank so trading power for superior convenience may be worthwhile.

As the technology evolves and more power can be packed into smaller spaces, it is reasonable to expect to see netbooks appearing on the market with more and more features. For now, netbooks fill what was once a large crack in the marketplace: affordable laptops for more casual computer users.

As cost and ease of use are important factors for consumers wanting to purchase a laptop, the appeal of the netbook computer is simple to understand. While netbooks offer less flexibility and computing power, they ably address the needs of a segment of the market that desires portability and basic functionality. When technology improves and netbooks evolve in stride, the distinction between laptop and netbook may become less clear.
