Asus EEE PC Pink Laptop

The Asus EEE Laptop in PinkAmazon is currently running a sale on the very popular Asus EEE subnotebook computer right now so I just had to get one. I went with the 2 GB model pictured on the left. I paid $300 and got it in 2 days thanks to Amazon Prime. I purchased it as a gift for my niece so I had to test it out before I gave it to her to make sure it worked, right? As soon as I opened up the box and saw the pastel pink lid I liked it right away.

In terms of hardware, the 2 gig drive is solid state flash memory, the processor is an 800 MHz Intel Mobile, the display is a 7 inch LCD with a resolution of 800x480 pixels and you get 802.11b/g wireless LAN. I was impressed with the number of ports for peripherals and add ons Asus managed to cram in to such a small package. Three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA output for connecting to external monitors, headphone and microphone jacks plus a Secure Digital (SD) memory card reader. When I say small, I mean ultracompact. As in tiny. Measuring just under 9 inches by 6.5 inches with 7 inches of screen and weighing only two pounds, this laptop can go just about anywhere with you. The construction is surprisingly rugged and with a solid state drive you won't have to treat it like it's made of glass. I was a little concerned about the build quality myself since the primary user of this machine is going to be a non adult, but I don't think I have much to worry about.

It took just a few seconds to boot up and the display was plenty bright and crisp. It's a Linux based system but don't let that scare you if you're used to Windows. The interface is very easy to navigate and uses tabs to group the bundled applications. Some of the included software is obviously meant for kids such as the arcade style math game and the periodic table app, but for grown ups there's Open Office, Thunderbird for email, a PDF reader and more. It also includes a media player and a photo manager. I tried out both and was able to play mp3s, view video clips and transfer photos. 2 gigs is not a lot of space but with the USB ports and removable storage it shouldn't be too hard to overcome. The touchpad and keyboard take some time to get used to as you would probably expect with so little real estate, but I didn't have much difficulty adjusting.

All in all, the Asus EEE 2G Surf exceeded my expectations. Obviously, it is no substitute for a desktop or a Macbook, but the Asus EEE might be ideal for young people, people who want something smarter than a smartphone but lighter than a 17 inch widescreen or users whose primary interest in computing is checking email and browsing the web.
